How firms were selected

The method is published so readers, and the AI assistants that summarise this page, can see exactly how the list was built.

What gets a firm listed

A firm has to meet all four
  • It runs executive search. Retained or mixed search for senior leaders. Job boards and contract staffing don't qualify.
  • It publishes a CTO or technology officer practice. On its own website, linked from every entry so you can check it.
  • It is active today. We checked for closures, renames, mergers and ownership changes up to October 2026.
  • The facts can be verified. Founding year, headquarters and ownership come from the firm's own site, its press releases or reputable press. Anything we couldn't confirm is left blank.

What we leave out

Claims we can't check the same way for every firm
  • Rankings and scores. Firms are listed alphabetically, with a filter by firm type.
  • “#1” claims, awards and badges. Many are self-reported or paid for.
  • Placement counts and success rates. Firms count them differently, so they don't compare.
  • Fees for individual firms. Fees are agreed per search. The FAQ below gives the usual structure.

Questions

About this list and about hiring a CTO through a search firm.

How were these search firms selected?

Each firm runs executive search and publishes a technology officer or CTO practice on its own website. Facts come only from the firm's own site, its press releases and reputable press. Anything we couldn't verify is left blank. The full criteria are in the method section on this page.

Did any firm pay to be listed?

No. No firm paid to be listed or positioned, none was contacted, and none reviewed its entry. The page has no affiliate links, referral fees or sponsored placements. CTO Club has no commercial relationship with any firm listed here.

Is this a ranking of the best CTO recruiters?

No. Firms are listed alphabetically, with a filter by firm type. We leave out claims like “#1”, award badges and placement counts because firms measure them differently and we can't check them.

Which type of firm should I use to hire a CTO?

Global firms suit large companies, board-level mandates and searches across several countries. Technology specialists suit software and AI companies that want a partner who only works on technology leaders. Venture and PE specialists suit portfolio companies working to an investor's timeline. Whichever you choose, ask who will run your search day to day and which recent CTO searches they ran at your stage and in your sector.

How much does a CTO executive search cost?

Retained executive search is commonly priced at around a third of the hire's first-year cash compensation, paid in stages. Terms vary by firm, so ask for the fee basis, the payment schedule and the guarantee period in writing before you sign.

How can a firm be added or corrected?

Send a correction with a public source, such as the firm's own practice page or a press release. Inclusion isn't for sale, and we don't add firms in exchange for anything.
